Tato di belakang punggung kekasih Meidian Muladi Fasha itu bergambar malaikat perempuan dengan kepala tertunduk. Gambar itu melambangkan sifat Poppy.

"Ini gambar malaikat cewek lagi menunduk. Ini penggambaran diri aku. Kalau aku punya masalah atau apapun itu, aku pasti simpan semuanya sendiri. Sifat aku seperti apa yang tergambar di tato ini," paparnya.

Here is our relaxed chat with Gesang in the midst of busy life for tattoo, photography, and wine... Check this out.

Knowing tattoo from the roads, terminals, and markets association, he became interested in tattoo and the art around the year of 93-94. At that time, he was in high school and began to consider tattooing as a professional job when you were graduated from school. “In principle, all of which form the character of a person is their environment,” he said. Gesang had learnt a lot with them (Dhodho, Gung De, Rheno, Gus Tu).

According to this one-child-father, the family is a source of happiness and inspiration. Bali is the perfect place for tattoo because they closely relate to tourism. The big number of tattoo studios in Bali is not a problem, the proliferation of tattoo studios are not a hindrance or competition. “Every person has their own abilities, their own market, quality and fortune alone, everything is set by the God,” he said. Being introduced to tattoo by his neighborhood community, a friend of his brother often made tattoos in Marmar’s house and brought tattoo magazines.Started from looking at the pictures in the magazines, Marmar began trying to draw on papers. Until the time when he was on high school, his friend brought full tattoo equipments and that was the beginning of his tattooing experiences, he started to make tattoos for his friends after school. Sometimes some parents of his friends came to his house and protested because their kids got inked by him. As time went by, he seriously pursued his interest in being a tattoo artist, ever worked at a tattoo studio in Nusa Indah, which was also his first tattoo studio. The studio was joined with a distro in one place. After almost a year working at the studio, Marmar opened a studio in his house for 2-3 years, and moved to Star Tattoo Legian, before finally he joined Suicide Glam Tattoo Parlor. It’s from this place he has learned a lot about management. He feels that Suicide Glam has influenced him in his character development as a professional tattoo artist.

As a tattoo artist from Bali, Marmar admitted that most Bali tattoo artists have good skills and can do freehand, but tight schedules make many of them not up to date. Different with tattoo artists outside Bali, Marmar has the opinion that their designs are up to date, and besides, they’re dare to spend time searching
new designs from the internet or magazines. For tattoo artists, Marmar chose Ibud and Shotonk as they create great works, while Ade Itameda is quite consistent and original in Indonesia.

Now, Marmar reruns the studio in his house, named Hellmonk Tattoo Studio, located in Denpasar. It’s cozy and capacious, not by the side of a big street, and so it fits for relaxing, far from the hectic atmosphere. Most of Marmar’s pictures use traditional figures, like Bali or Japan figures (these 2 kinds are the easiest to find in his gallery and being displayed in the studio). In creating a concept for his client’s tattoo design, sometimes Marmar has a unique habit. He will draw while listening to the client’s favorite music, or by summarizing a story based on his conversation with the client. Besides being busy with his new studio, Marmar also make things for the studio displays, and of course music. For him, music is something he cannot leave behind.

MAGIC INK TATTOO CONTEST 2010

Sabtu (21/8), Magic Ink menyelenggarakan untuk pertama kalinya event Magic Ink Tattoo Contest 2010, terbagi menjadi 2 kategori yaitu Black & Gray dan Color, dengan mengambil tema Extreme Fantasy. 38 peserta yang didominasi studio tato di Bali dan juga beberpa peserta dari luar bali (malang, surabaya dan semarang) berebut 2 tempat terbaik di masing-masing kategori.
Dimulai sekitar pukul 11 siang, dan diisi oleh deretan band-band lokal Bali. The Rolic membuka acara..disusul The 2nd Home, fight back.. dan Dreizehn bikin suasana jadi luluh lantah oleh gempuran distorsi berkolaborasi dengan suara desing mesin tato. Nosstress naik panggung menenangkan suasana. Roy Parsua dan Angga El’Diablo sibuk sendiri berkolaborasi dipaha model mereka

Setelah itu penjurian dilaksanakan, jajaran juri diwakili artist tato (Ibud, Abuth, & Daplonk) lalu dari kalangan pelukis (Welldo) dan dari komunitas Sketch (Dede). Sambil menunggu perhitungan hasil penilaian, Pengunjung mendekat ke area Body Suspension dari Albar Tikam Suku Suku Tatau dan Oni Killcat.

Dan akhirnya hasil penilaian keluar dengan pemenang di Kategori Color adalah Mangku dari AS Tatto sebagai juara pertama dan Toge dari Radjah Skin Design diposisi kedua. Dikategori Black & Gray, Andre dari My Liberty menjadi juara dan Agung Star Tatoo ditempat kedua. Untuk best extreme fantasy dimenangi oleh Andre dari My Liberty melalui hasil voting penonton. The Hydrant yang hari itu menjadi bintang tamu, tampil terakhir sekaligus menutup acara.

How to choose a tattoo studio

So you have decided about the tattoo design and the location of the tattoo on your body. Now it is time to select the right place where you can get it done properly. Of course it is the tattoo studio but you should check the following in this regard...

You should first of all check the Tattoo Artist certifications.
You should check the autoclave and sterilization certifications
You should make sure that artist wears protective gloves.
You should be sure about the cleanliness of the equipments that are being used in the process of tattooing.
You should properly observe that the ointments, ink and water used for the purpose are taken from separate and clean containers.
You should insist that sterile or new needles should be taken from an autoclave bag in front of you.
And after the use the needles should be disposed off appropriately.
You should also insist on the use of fresh inks used as the color of the tattoos.
Also make sure that each color of ink comes from a bottle that is poured into a small cup specifically for your tattoo.
Satisfy yourself by ensuring that neither a needle is reused nor the remains of prior used ink could be used on you.
You should see prior designs of tattoos made by the artists in the studio.
You should allow the Tattoo Artist touch your skin only after being fully satisfied about his talent.
Never mind even if it takes a long time to find a neat and clean parlor as well as the artist.

Unyil is one of tattoo artists that prefers horse than Harley. He loves culinary as well as Celtic world. Used to open his own tattoo studio in Malang and Jakarta, and finally now he is in Bali joining Suku-Suku Tatau Studio. For him, tattoo is the highest art which will be carried on forever. Below was the interview between Magic Ink and Unyil who just got ready traveling to East Java!

How long have you been in Bali?
I’ve been here for a year, but before that I used to have a studio in Malang, also in Jakarta. Those studios were closed for some mistakes, but I’d learned from it.

How’s the story so that you finally end up in Suku-Suku Tatau?
It’s simple. There are many tattoo studios, but I’m here because of the similarities in concept, art, and treble style.

Talking about tattoo style, what do you incline to?
Actually there are lots of tattoo styles, but I’d more likely to call them character or pattern, not style. Just like most people who look from the art character, I incline to Celtic.

And why are you so expert in Celtic patterns?
I don’t know, maybe because I like Celtic pictures, the complexity in it amazes me. I guess that’s why I love Celtic, hahaha..

Is there any difference among tattoo art in Malang, Jakarta, and Bali?
Maybe the difference is in the customers. Bali is more superior for it’s in the international scale, because it connects with the tourism. Because of tourism, I can learn much and try new things, but not only for trials and errors, ok. Hahaha..

Anyway, how did you learn tattoo art?
I learned autodidactly, never really had a specific learning. I work by following the nature, from what it gives to me. I started doing tattoo in 1990, but productively in 1996.

Why don’t you become an entrepreneur?
Hahahahaha, I prefer becoming a tattoo artist. I think it’s impossible for me being an entrepreneur. I mean, tattoo artist is also an entrepreneur, but there’s no way becoming a real one.

Do you have a will to pilgrimage?
Hahahahaha, I guess not. Maybe I’ll make my wife a pilgrim.

We’re curious, do you like music?
Hahaha, I like foods better. Wherever I come and stay, the first thing I look for is always culinary.

Ok man, give us your wise words!
I hope tattoo can grow better in our community. Thanks to my family, my parents who already delivered me to this world, especially my wife who always supports me. “I’m nothing without my
family,” and hopefully Magic Ink will be bigger and more familiar.

Last question, why are you called Unyil?
That’s my nick name since I was a little kid. Until now I’m the biggest one, I’m still called Unyil. But I got that name from the street, so it should be saved, hahaha..

Made Della is one of some artists who has been in Kuta, Bali for quite a long time. He started to wrestle with tattoo art since 1989. And from 1994, he began to be a tattoo artist in Kuta. According to him, at that time there were only few tattoo studios in Kuta, like Demon Tattoo, Baladewa, Mr. Dolphin, and Gungde.

After some time becoming a tattoo artist in some studios, in 2009 he decided to reopen his own studio named Black Angel. Recently, he has a plan to invite Bali tattoo artists establishing Bali Tattoo Artist Club again. Because for him, business is business, but solidarity and togetherness need to keep going. And here is a brief interview between Magic Ink and Made Bella.

What makes you holding out in tattoo art for so long?
We didn’t have any other job to do, hahahaha... And maybe tattoo was the only good thing for my life, hahaha…

When did you get your first tattoo?
Back in that 1989. Gungde made it. Besides, he fully supported me to be a tattoo artist. He always supports me.

Why did you decide to reopen your own studio?
If I used to work for other people, then I wanted to have my own. Moreover, I’m preparing a new generation, like Agus (Della’s son-red). So that Black Angel always exists.

You used to have a studio, why was it closed?
I did the business with my family, and there were some problems about financial quotient.

You are one of the people who have been holding on the tattoo industry in Kuta for quite a long time, how do you see its development?
Me and my friends used to compete more from our works, not from the rate. So please, for Bali tattoo artists, don’t compete in rate. We live from tattoo, so don’t bring each other down.

In tattoo, what style do you tend to?
Actually I can do all of them, but I like Chinese and Japanese style more.

And about BTAC (Bali Tattoo Artist Club), in your opinion, what’s the reason it does not go well?
I myself don’t understand too much about it, because it happened when I went to Germany. I was in Germany for 3 months, and when I got back it had already fallen apart. But I really think that BTAC should be established again. There are so many foreign artists opening studios in their rent houses and without any permit. Their visa is visa for holiday, not for working. If we’re not solid, we can be colonized. I mean, colonized in another version. If people with big capital come in and we’re not ready and solid, it’s possible that Indonesian artists are scraped and work to them. But again, for Bali tattoo artists, we don’t need to argue about rate. Also for the works, from the first I learned, up to now I still learn. Just keep learning, no need to get above oneself.

But it doesn’t mean that you’re scared to compete, right?
Oh no... I just want that artists stop arguing about rate.

And for the high rate of guide, what do you think as a tattoo artist? Do you feel harmed?
No, not really. We still depend on their service. Unless we have big capital, hehehe.. That’s why we need BTAC. It covers up these matters.

Bali Tattoo Studio: Dolphin Studio

This Tattoo Studio can be said as a unique one. It’s not easy to be found as it is located inside of Kuta Art Marketplace, but still full of customer everyday. That’s right, placed in Jl. Dewi Sartika which lately known as an oldest Tattoo Studio in Bali. This studio was built in 1975. There are three rooms, one is used as a tattoo execution, and another is used as a sitting room and a small rest room. Here they have two Tattoo Artists, Wayan Isu and Made Daplonk. This studio suits for about two-three clients. Whilst they wait, the waiting-list costumer or they who are just accompanying their friend could be well sit and enjoy a bunch of tattoo magazine and their sample of works. It is guarantee you won’t feel bored or maybe you will get ideas from it. Just in case you get bored, you may walk outside and go to Kuta Art Marketplace to shop or just look around there, to kill times. This studio is facilitated with television, air conditioner, and Medical Sterilizers. About the ink, they use Starbright and Kuro Sumi ink. In a week, this studio handles more than 20 costumers.

Bali Tattoo Studio: Karang Tattoo

This tattoo studio has begun for 3 months. Divided into 2 rooms with roominess 6x6 meter. When we come in, we will find a very comfy guest room. The tattoo studio is next to the guest room. The studio is cozy and can receive many customers all in one place. For about 4 people can sit while have the tattoo. The facilities are AC, medical sterilizer in the tattoo studio, a guest room with AC and TV, nice for the queuing customers or those who wait for their relatives getting the tattoo. The
price is negotiable and depends on the picture of the tattoo. While for the ink, this studio uses Intend and Kuro Sumi. The tattoo artist is Adi Benk who is already in the field for 7 years. Since the studio is new and a little hidden, many people have not discovered it yet. The clients are approximately 5 people a week. It is in Kuta Theatre or mostly known as Mushroom alley. So, after you got the tattoo or while waiting for your friend, enjoy the mushroom! Yeah!

Bali Tattoo Artist : Shotonk

Shotonk started knowing tattoo when he was only a junior high school student. Because of his drawing ability, a friend lent him his equipment and body to be the learning means. “Almost all over his body is full of my works,” Shotonk said.

A buffalo head was Shotonk’s first work on the body of Kadek Suardika, his friend. He said it was ugly and in disorder, but he always practiced on his friend’s body ever since. After he was confident enough, in 1998 he opened his own tattoo studio in Singaraja. But it was only a year before he decided to move to Kuta.

At first in Kuta, Shotonk became a temporary tattoo artist in Matahari Mall Legian. Then he reopened his own studio named Bulldog Tattoo in Kuta Square, but unfortunately it only lasted for a year. After that, Shotonk joined in Legian 64 studio, then moved to Mr. Barong, and finally went back to Legian 64 for 7 years before he again opened Shotonk Tattoo Studio. He decided to run a private studio because he thought it was impossible to work for someone else forever, also it was about time for him learning to be responsible of his own future. Up to now, he still keeps in touch with his old friends in Legian 64. Even when he was asked about the person who had a big influence in his career as a tattoo artist, hard for him to answer. “Some people have influenced me, but mostly Agung. We became partners for quite a long time..,” he answered.

In the middle of his activities as a tattoo artist, Shotonk always has some time to go back to his hometown, Singaraja, every twice a month to see his 4 children. It has been 3 years he becomes a single parent.

And in the end of the interview with Magic Ink, Shotonk shared his hope that all tattoo artists keeping up the quality in order to make tattoo as one tourism attraction, so together they can grow the art of tattoo. To Magic Ink, he wanted us to support each other. “If we support people, they will support us, too. There is karma in it..,” he ended that afternoon conversation.

Tattoo removal is something we hope you ’ll never have to consider. After all most of us would like to think that a tattoo is forever – that’s why we get them in the first place! But what if your tattoo turns out to be a mistake? That’s a thought that goes through everyone’s mind at some point, and the fact is, some tattoos do end up being a source of regret. Here are some reasons why some people consider tattoo removal:

Your tattoo is in a visible place on your body, it could be holding you back from getting a new job.

You have a tattoo that is connected in some way with an ex girl or boyfriend. The love is over and so is your love for the tattoo.

You don’t like what your tattoo artist did, you’re not happy with the quality of the tattoo design.

Bodies change as we get older

That’s why today’s improved tattoo removal techniques are good news for many people. That having been said, tattoo removal is still not quick, easy or cheap. In fact, it may turn out to be substantially more expensive and painful than it was to get the tattoo in the first place, so no one should make the decision to get a tattoo with the idea that it can be removed later on if you change your mind!

The good news, though, is that the end result of tattoo removal is quite good these days. Tattoos can successfully be removed, though it takes a bit of research and effort.

Tattoo Removal Creams
The difficulty inherent in removing tattoos is related to tattooing technique. When you get a tattoo, the ink is deposited in the dermis, the lower layer of skin. That’s why it can’t be rubbed off, and why the ink-laden skin is not shed and renewed. In case of tattoo removal that deep layer of skin needs to be accessed. This is why you shouldn’t trust the so-called tattoo
removal cream that sometimes comes on the market – tattoo removal creams are very unlikely to be effective.

Chemical Peel
Other, more ‘drastic’ tattoo removal methods do work. One proven method is tattoo removal by chemical peel, which progressively removes layers of skin and, eventually, the tattoo design. Sometimes acid is used in that process – this is known as trichloroacetic acid tattoo removal.
A process call microdermabrasion, which essentially ‘sands’ the skin, is also used to remove tattoos. In the past small tattoos were sometimes removed surgically. The problem with all of these methods is that they tend to cause scarring. For people really determined to get rid of a tattoo, this might be acceptable – but for many, it was a catch-22. If the object is unblemished skin, a scar really isn’t any better than a tattoo.

Laser Tattoo Removal
Luckily, some new methods for tattoo removal were developed in the late 1980s, and have been used with increasing success ever since. One of these is infrared coagulation tattoo removal, and the other – the most popular modern method, in fact – is laser tattoo removal. This highly
effective and relatively painless method is very successful, and doesn’t leave a scar. It is expensive, though – while getting a tattoo generally cost $100 - $200, depending on the intricacy of the tattoo, removal of that same tattoo might cost you up to ten times that amount!

Tell us the stories which made you as a tattoo artist?
I was keen on painting and drawing. In 1980 I learned tattoo with my brother Gede Surya. He is the first tattoo artist in Bali. In his studio, everyday I learned with him.

Why do you interested in tattoo?
The first time, I just try it and as time goes by, I am more interested in painting on skin than on canvas. And painting on skin has more challenges.

Then, who was the first your client?
I don’t remember the name, but he is my friend for sure. And the motif was so standard, a flower, if I’m not getting any mistake.

From all of the kind of tattoo, which one do you prefer?
I am not concerning in one of them. Coz in Bali you can’t only take one category, you have to capable in all category. Therefore I always learn and learn, coz tattoo always change.

Which part is your favourite to be tattooed?
Leg, that’s the best part.

Where did you get your tattoo equipments?
I got them by ordered it from abroad.

Tell us about your tattoo studio?
It has been at my house since the first time coz tattoo used to be taboo and also couldn’t guarantee my living cost. And I decided to quit my study and became a tattoo artist since then.

Why don’t you own a studio around Kuta?
I am more excited working at home. Chill and I don’t have to manage employee. But sometimes I go to my client’s hotel to make tattoo.

What do you think tattoo nowadays?
It becomes marvelous, including tattoo artist itself, the equipments and also the capabilities. And it becomes more familiar.

Until when you’ll be exist as a tattoo artist?
As long as I am able to make tattoo, then I’ll be it.

Future plan for tattoo?
Nothing, just go with the flow.
